Many social services agencies across the nation are greatly out of touch with mainstream American families. One example of this occurred when an Arizona family submitted a roll of film for development at their local store. Among the photographs were typical “baby-bath-time” pictures. When a store employee contacted social services, all three of the couple’s daughters were taken away. Social services alleged that the pictures were child pornography. An Arizona Superior Court judge dismissed the criminal charges. The family is now suing the state of Arizona, the state attorney general’s office, and the city.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge J. Richard Gama in October 2008 ruled that the photographs were innocent pictures taken during the children’s bath time. Despite the judge’s ruling, an investigation by Child Protective Services continued for months.
