Kelly Walters* was going through a rough patch in her life, so she started seeing a counselor at a Christian counseling center. After several sessions, Kelly casually mentioned to the counselor that Kelly’s teenage son sometimes watched the younger children while Kelly ran an errand. Kelly thought nothing of mentioning it and the counselor said nothing about it. Later that evening, though, Kelly got a voicemail from a number she didn’t recognize. After listening to it, she was shocked.

“This is Brenda with Child Protective Services. A report has been made against you.”

After listening to the rest of the voicemail, Kelly was floored. It was clear that the Christian counselor whom Kelly had come to trust was the one who had reported her to CPS for alleged child neglect.

As a member of Heritage Defense, Kelly immediately called the 24/7 Heritage Defense line. Heritage Defense quickly engaged a local attorney for the Walters family, who then reached out to CPS on the family’s behalf.

Once the CPS investigator learned that an attorney was representing the family, the investigator became much less demanding and much more reasonable, allowing the Walters’ attorney to get the case resolved relatively easily. In fact, the Walters family did not have to deal with CPS at all after that first phone call. The only other contact they had with CPS was when they received a letter in the mail stating that the allegations were unfounded and that the case had been closed.
