Member Story: CPS texted me

Lexi Moss’s* phone buzzed on the counter. She glanced at the screen. It was a text message from an unknown number. Lexi opened the message and was shocked at what she read.
The message was from child protective services, and it stated that CPS had received a report about issues concerning their family. Lexi stood still for a moment, trying to grasp what was happening. Then, she remembered Heritage Defense.
Lexi quickly dialed the 24/7 emergency hotline, and after giving a brief description of what had happened, she was promptly connected with an attorney.
The Heritage Defense attorney asked Lexi if she had any idea where the report could have originated. Lexi told the attorney that her adopted eight-year-old son, Noah, had been diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder, which at times resulted in him throwing fits of rage, causing property damage, and hurting himself.
Lexi went on to tell the attorney that Noah was her sister’s son, that she had a long history of drugs and abuse, that she had been unable to care for Noah properly, and that he was severely neglected as a baby.
Lexi told the attorney that they had been working with therapists and their church elders on the situation. She suspected that the report could have come from a teacher of a class Noah was taking online.
The attorney called the CPS investigator. The investigator said she wanted to interview Noah and all of the Mosses’ other children, each alone in private.
The attorney did not agree to that. The attorney agreed to a meeting with the parents but insisted that he also be present. The meeting went well. CPS asked a few questions about the allegations while the attorney interjected when questions were irrelevant.
After the meeting, CPS told the Mosses and their attorney that they had everything they needed and would contact them when they had concluded the investigation.
Not long afterwards, CPS contacted the attorney, telling him CPS was closing the Mosses’ case.
Dan and Lexi expressed their gratitude to Heritage Defense: “We were really grateful for you guys and super thankful for how well it worked out. It was easy. It didn’t seem very complicated, even though it was stressful. We really appreciate you guys.”
