Instead of Barging through Doors and Taking Children from Loving Parents, Wisconsin Social Services Tests Another Approach

Wisconsin social services has launched a limited pilot program which aims at taking fewer children from parents, making fewer and less intrusive investigations, and respecting, at least to a greater degree, parental jurisdiction.

Rather than opening a formal investigation in cases in which no imminent threat is substantiated, a family will be offered help and guidance in a more informal manner.

* * *One example in which the new program might be beneficial involves a parent spanking his child, said Jess Bowers, Marathon County’s community response social worker. If there is cause for concern, but no physical sign of child abuse, social workers will work with the parent so spanking doesn’t escalate to abuse.

 

“When just doing traditional responses, it’s really intrusive,” Bowers said. “And the family may not want to work with you.”
