Member Story: Our 1 y.o. spilled hot tea on himself

Posted on October 23, 2025

The following account was written by a Heritage Defense member family we assisted.

Thank you, Heritage Defense, for your help over the phone a few weeks ago, and for the peace of mind you provide us and other homeschool families!

Our family is so grateful for the readily available support from Heritage Defense!

The morning our 1-year-old accidentally pulled hot tea on himself was stressful, to say the least. It was a Sunday morning, and we were preparing to head to church. I had set my cup of hot tea on the table to steep, and I put our baby in his booster seat, absent-mindedly not noticing that the hot tea was within arm’s reach for him.

As I turned to prepare breakfast for our daughter, I heard the cup scraping on the table, and turned back around just in time to see the cup of tea spilling onto our precious, curious, quick-grabbing baby.

After immediately removing him from the booster seat to run his arms and legs under cool water, I assessed him, and though the burns did not look severe (just red, really), I decided to take him to urgent care because he would not calm down or stop crying.

Unfortunately, the local pediatric urgent care was not yet open (it was about 8 am when all of this took place), so I tried the general urgent care closest to us...but neither they nor the urgent care across the street would accept "such a young patient." By this point, there was still about half an hour before the pediatric urgent care would open at 9 am, so I decided to bring him to the children's ER, as he was still crying with only brief breaks.

After receiving treatment, the doctor informed us that it was standard practice for us to speak with the hospital social worker. Inwardly, I panicked - this was the moment I feared - a simple accident (that thankfully turned out to be very minor) threw us under the critical eye of social workers.

A quick text to my husband and sister convinced me to give Heritage Defense a call. After all, it's because of situations like these that we are members! In moments, I was connected with an attorney who listened attentively to my situation and concerns, reassured me of what to say/do, and encouraged me to call back discreetly if anything seemed to go south.

Thankfully, the conversation with the social worker went smoothly, and she understood that this was an accident, pure and simple. I was so grateful to have Heritage Defense available to ease my fears and help me not worry as much about the conversation with the social worker. Thank you for supporting us in such a stressful time!

God bless you all!
